Get to know Professor Prisca Ngondo

Have you met SJMC’s own Prisca Ngondo? Professor Ngondo teaches in the public relations sequence in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and she sat down with us this week to tell us a few things her students and colleagues might know about her. For this faulty spotlight, we thought it would be fun to find out what she likes to do when she’s not busy grading papers and more. Check it out below!

Q: Where are you from and currently live?

A: Harare, Zimbabwe, but I also claim the DFW (Dallas/ Forth Worth) and San Marcos, Texas. I currently live in San Marcos, Texas.

Q: How do you feel about Texas compared to your hometown?

A: They’re both hot! I can’t escape the heat.

Q: How long have you been with the SJMC?

A: Since August, 2015

Q: What’s different from this school compared to other schools you’ve worked with?

A: One main difference that I enjoy: Texas State is close to big cities, and it gives us access to industry professionals who we can connect with. Chico State is more remote, but I enjoyed both experiences for different reasons.

 Q: What courses do you teach?

A: Writing for PR, PR Research, Advanced Social Media and Analytics, Intro to PR

Q: How will the new Advanced Social Media and Analytics class help prepare students for the future?  

A: The class will help students because [social media] is the future. It prepares them to fill current industry needs and trends.

Q: What are some of your hobbies or things you enjoy doing outside of work?

A: Binge watching Netflix shows and hanging out with family and friends.

Q: What inspires you? 

A: My 3-year-old daughter, Yani. Her fresh, unbiased outlook on life is refreshing. She inspires me to be a better person and to work hard at work and at home.

Q: What do you find most fulfilling or rewarding about teaching college students?  

A: Their zest for life and willingness to learn.

Q: Any advice you have for current SJMC students?

A: Start how you want to finish!

 

SJMC Students Go Mobile at Garner State Park

A group of 16 School of Journalism and Mass Communication students spent the weekend of Feb. 27-28 outdoors – in the name of mobile storytelling.

The students were part of the first-ever Mobile Storytelling in the Park course, taught by Dale Blasingame in coordination with Texas Parks and Wildlife. The class, which was part of the SJMC short course series, featured two weeks of online learning about how to shoot professional-quality photos and videos on your phone – everything from shot composition, camera apps, editing apps and storytelling techniques. The students then traveled to Garner State Park to put those ideas to the test. They were responsible for four video projects while in the park, all with the goal of getting more college-aged students to visit state parks across Texas.

“It got me out of my comfort zone,” said Abby Watson, an advertising senior. “I feel like in class, you just sit there and might get a little bored. But with this, you’re constantly going.”

Faculty members Kym Fox and Jon Zmikly, along with Ky Harkey, Tyler Priest, Sasha Kodet and Whitney Bishop from Texas Parks and Wildlife, assisted with the course.

Zmikly helped lead a drone demonstration with DJI Phantom Quadcopters 2 and 3 and contributed to the official Texas State University’s Snapchat (txstateu) during the weekend workshop.

“I loved getting outside and helping students with their projects. Their stories were really creative, and I could tell they had a lot of fun. These are the kinds of experiences students don’t get in the classroom,” said Zmikly.

Students used GoPros, HD mini-cameras, smartphones, mini-tripods and lapel mics to cover and capture the weekend experience, and they also gained experience with drones and 360 cameras. Footage was then edited and uploaded to various social media sites, and mobile hotspots were used when service wasn’t available. One creative project is their 360 video of the sunset over Mount Baldy where you can see the Frio river to the east (as the below video plays, click and drag your mouse for different views).

On Saturday evening, Texas Parks and Wildlife photographers led a session on night photography where students learned about aperture settings, shutter speeds and different ISO options.

The students are currently working in teams on different mini-documentary projects that will be used by Texas Parks and Wildlife. They’ve already submitted individual video projects on Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook.

Dee Kapila visits FDOM class

deeTexas State alumna Dee Kapila spoke to Fundamentals of Digital and Online Media students on Wednesday about the importance of constantly learning new skills in a digital career.

Kapila graduated from the University of Texas with an undergraduate degree in advertising. After graduating, she began her career at Dell as a product specialist. Kapila always had a passion for communication and technology, so she decided to further her education at Texas State University where she graduated with a master’s degree in new media in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 2008.

After obtaining her master’s, she worked for many different companies doing instructional technology. Kapila is now starting her new job as a product manager at Headspring in Austin, TX.

Kapila had great advice for students by telling them to feel comfortable about jumping into new things and learning new skills as soon as possible.

“Always think about yourself as a CEO in training,” Kapila said. “As a CEO, you need to know a little bit about everything.”

She then went on to explain how quickly technology changes and encourages students to be able to adapt. “Some skills in technology come and go, but HTML and CSS aren’t going anywhere,” Kapila said. “Knowing code is very important.”

Kapila also believes that having an online presence is extremely important. “Social media and blogging are no longer frivolous endeavors,” Kapila said. “It’s now the primary way companies communicate and interact.”

SJMC weekly TV newscast to make smashing return

Bobcat Update Newscast

Electronic media students are preparing this week for the return of Bobcat Update, the SJMC’s weekly television newscast.

This year marks the highest number of students enrolled in the program, with over 80 students participating in the making and airing of the show.

For more than 20 years, Bobcat Update has been known for airing over the local cable networks, but now the show is also streamed online over a service known as Ustream.

“We love digital,” said Dr. England, the electronic media sequence coordinator. “We love it when a story blows up online.”

By expanding beyond the limitations of traditional television, Bobcat Update has reached a much wider audience online. Students share every piece of news on Facebook and Twitter.

Bobcat Update’s first airing of the semester is Feb. 24. The show can be viewed live at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays via online streaming, or on Grande Cable Channel 19 and Time Warner Channel 16.

Many of the show’s previous newscasts can be watched on the Bobcat Update YouTube Channel.

SJMC Student selected to present at NCA Conference

Graduate student Joshua Morrison, will be representing Texas State and SJMC at this year’s National Communication Association’s 101st Annual Conference. The conference will take place Nov. 19 – 22 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is Morrison’s second time to present at the conference and will be presenting two papers — one in the Performance Studies Division and the other in Rhetorical and Communication Theory Division.

The rhetoric division is the biggest at the conference, and Morrison will be presenting as one of the top four papers in that division.

He discusses how celebrity studies is an emerging and growing field in academia, a very broad and interdisciplinary field that includes departments in English,FullSizeRender history, sociology and communications.

“The intersection that I meet at when I study this topic is rhetoric and communication, media studies, performance studies and critical cultural studies,” Morrison said.

Morrison is interested in the role the media plays in celebrity culture and the conversations the media industry has about fame and celebrities, especially women as public figures.

According to Morrison, the conversations regarding men usually revolve more around their craft as a performer, but the focus of women is more about what they are wearing and less about their craft.

Morrison encourages expanding the institution of celebrity studies to increase awareness about the disparity of gender, racial and class lines that exist in the media’s coverage.

“Who better to change these conversations than the people who write the headlines?” Morrison asks.

SJMC students live on Twitter

This past week, Fundamentals of Digital and Online Media (FDOM) students participated in a Twitter Scavenger Hunt.  FDOM uses Twitter as its main form of class communication. The objective of this particular assignment was to help students get comfortable with different Twitter features as well as utilizing social media to promote their own personal brand. Students used the class hashtag, #FDOM15 and the school hashtag, #TXST in every tweet to help connect with their classmates and other students at Texas State.

Students were given ten different topics to tweet about and were asked to include quotes, pictures and links to engage followers and promote creativity. Taking a Tour: BBC in London

The British Broadcasting Corporation is one of the most recognizable, highly creditable news organizations in the world. From local to worldwide news coverage, the BBC brings the highest quality of news from journalists that reach outlets such as radio, television and social media. Unlike some news companies around the world that are owned by the government, BBC operates by an annual licensing fee, which citizens of England pay in order to run radio, television broadcasts and premiere shows such as Doctor Who, The Office (English version) and many more. corporation

The BBC headquarters is located in London (between Portland Place and Langham Place) and contains the BBC Broadcasting House with television studios, radio studios, the main newsroom (where some of the BBC program is recorded), and a small theatre boasting concerts held by A-list musicians.

Our Tour
After getting through security and getting our backpacks and purses scanned and checked, we waited in a lobby that showcased TARDIS, the Doctor Who famous telephone booth, in front of a small gift shop overlooking the BBC Newsroom. Our tour guide first provided us a brief overview of the history of the BBC and its mission statement toward the people of Britain and viewers from around the world. During this brief lecture, we stood in front of a wall made of glass that overlooked the hundreds of employees and desk of the BBC Newsroom. As the tour went on, the guide paused and mentioned that a live weather report was happening. Sure enough, we saw the weatherman a few feet away and on the tube. Finally, we traveled from the newsroom to the studio station, which was in another building that had radio and television sets. Along the way, we passed through historical pieces from the longevity of the BBC, from the microphone used by Edward R. Murrow in World War II broadcastings, to all the memorabilia from celebrities. Walking through the Broadcasting House was a mass communication history lesson in itself.

After viewing the theatre, radio and television studio, it was time for us to have a bit of fun. The tour allows participants to take part in a newscast and small, scripted play. After it was all said and done, the BBC tour was a must-do if you catch yourself in London. It does not matter if you’re a journalist major, advertising major or public relations major, there is something to learn and grasp from the BBC.

The Megaphone Project: Letting small voices be heard

With the goal of “letting small voices be heard”, a group of Texas State University undergraduate students has teamed up with SJMC lecturer Holly Wise to create The Megaphone. This online publication was created as part of the undergraduate multimedia journalism elective course, and serves as a voice for local groups looking to bring about social change in the community.

Though Wise spearheads the operation, she believes the students are the true stars of the show. Her goal is to facilitate the project, and guide the students in the right direction. And she certainly knows a thing or two about managing an online publication; Wise is also the founder of Voicebox Media, a group that uses multimedia journalism to tell the stories of nongovernmental organizations.

Strategic Opportunities for Students to Transfer to Texas State

Harry BowersOn November 24, Assistant Director Harry Bowers met with Marianne Odem, Chair of the Media Communication Department at San Antonio College (SAC), and members of her faculty. The goal of the meeting was to review changes to both schools’ institutional core and program curricula, and to review and develop strategies to maximize opportunities for two-year college students planning to transfer to Texas State. Assistant Director, Bowers was honored to be informed by SAC that the School of Journalism and Mass Communication is about the most student-centered institution that San Antonio College has worked with in assisting transfer students.
