Conditioning is one of the key practices when training for boxing. That’s what Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for at Boxing Kings Gym. Conditioning consists of repetitive workouts that help build strength and endurance. Those workouts include hitting a giant tire with a sledgehammer. “We try to make it fun. It helps them lose weight and gives them stamina,” said Sara Perez, wife of the gym’s owner who helps train the boxers. “As amateur fighters, they fight three one-minute rounds, so they have to be able to keep moving at the same pace from the start of that minute to the end of it. 60 seconds is a long time when you’re in the ring and if you’re moving slow, it’s going to kick your butt.”
